Tae Chosŏn Chido This Cheonhado (« map of the world under the sky ») dating from 1874 is one of the last specimens of a korean tradition dating back to the 17th century. With little concern for geographic reality, the jido (« country painting ») seems to show an inland continent, china and its neighbours ; surrounding it, an inland sea dotted with islands with taoist descriptions ; then an external continent, the rest of the world, and another sea. But certain specialists attribute to these popular sheets a misappropriation of western origin : in the centre, Asia, Africa and Europe ; surrounding them, the various oceans with their islands ; then a single North and South American continent forming a circle.
